An individual made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from non-public details of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the hours before President Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a initial bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that traders estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet these probabilities had jumped to over 10% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the early hours of the next day, indicating a sharp shift in positions just before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a transaction based on non-public details," said an industry expert.

Several of other traders also earned significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week would prevent public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to wager on everything from elections to current affairs.

This sector were examined under the previous administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
