Delhi Awakens to Toxic Haze Following Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with exposed to extremely polluted air that fell into the "critical" category.

Extremely High Pollution Levels

Various sections of Delhi recorded an pollution measurement over 500, which equals 10x the safe level set by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x higher than safe levels.

Fireworks Prohibition and New Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous smog that engulfs the capital as the cold season begins.

Yet earlier this year, the recently formed city leadership approached the highest court to seek a modification of the ban.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically criticized by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and environment".

Judicial Decision and Implementation

Despite concerns of environmental and health advocates, judges approved the proposal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during designated hours throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was widespread violation of the time restrictions across the capital, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.

Numerous recording stations throughout Delhi registered contamination spiking around midnight to the most severe levels seen during Diwali in at least three years.

Regional Effects

The widespread use of firecrackers during the celebrations also sparked a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating air quality in their urban centers on hazardous particles originating in neighboring India following the festivities.

Chronic Pollution Issue

Alarmingly severe levels of air contamination in the capital have remained as a serious challenge for more than 15 years, with the situation showing no improvement.

During celebratory seasons, the levels of toxic particles in the air has been observed to shoot up to 70% higher the peak records ever documented in Beijing, which was formerly viewed as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Diverse Pollution Factors

The situation in Delhi is attributed to a convergence of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, development work, waste incineration and smoke from farm burning in adjacent areas of Punjab and Haryana.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, generating toxic haze that becomes contained over the city as colder air sets in.

Medical and Financial Consequences

The economic and health toll on the roughly thirty-three million residents calling home the capital region is substantial, according to multiple studies.

These hazardous conditions causes increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing disorders, and can result in cancer.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be responsible for approximately 10k premature mortalities annually in Delhi.
