Her Royal Highness's Annual Festive Carol Concert Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly festive musical service at the iconic London venue, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have helped their communities.

The sizable congregation will listen to a blend of carols, music and readings from actors such as Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Focusing on Love and Generosity

The focus of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

In the audience are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose daughter died of a tumour, and who founded an organisation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a terminally ill child.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often quietly and unspoken, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the circumstances of individuals," the Princess expressed in a note prior to the festive gathering.

A Gradual Return

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own measured re-emergence to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her initial major address in two years, in which she discussed recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Music and Opportunity

Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from budding artists aided by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the late Duchess of Kent to increase availability of instrumental training.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who plays the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been helped by the trust, with awards contributing to equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "awesome" to be taking part in the evening's event.

"Pursuing music is often costly," she stated. She is now a student at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to develop their musical skills.

A Sisterly Duo

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who performs on the brass instrument, will likewise attend the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Within the audience will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will encompass Saphia Turner, aged nine, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to generate funds for local food charities.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been festooned with specially made wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Taking to the stage will be Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the perfect culmination."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
